Historical Society & Museum History: North Central Nevada Historical Society (NCNHS) was established in 1974, with the primary goal of preserving local history. In 1977, with the help of a bi-centennial grant, a former church building, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, was relocated to a section of land donated by the City of Winnemucca to NCNHS. This structure housed Humboldt Museum, and its collection, for nearly a decade. Today, the former St. Mary's Episcopal Church is utilized for many museum, community, and private events.
Over the years there have been many additions and changes to the museum complex. Today's visitor will find an 1880's store, a 1899 Eastlake Style home, and a modern two-story brick building now housing the bulk of the museum's collections. In 2013 a large plaza was constructed to aid in the stabilization of the two-story brick building. This plaza also serves as a venue for events during spring/summer months. In 2015, Humboldt Museum became privy to a paved road and new parking lot. Then in 2017, the Humboldt River Viewing Plaza was constructed. Today, there are plans to continue this progressive momentum in developing our community's accurate portrayal of local history.
