Located along the Humboldt River through Winnemucca.
According to pioneer journals, many wagon trains stopped about 1 mile up river from what would become Winnemucca in order to rest and allow their animals to graze in the meadows. The area was also a preferred site to ford the Humboldt River and eventually a trading post, run by a French man, was established. For this reason Winnemucca was known as "French Ford" early on.
