Railroad Street was once filled with all the typical bustling western railroad town activities you see in the movies. It was filled with teams hauling to and from the depot, pedestrians and stage buggies. This portion of Block I, fronting Railroad Street was also home to several businesses including restaurants, bars, stores, hotels, a lumber yard, and brewery that also doubled as a temporary jail and courthouse in 1873.
A massive fire in August 1919 destroyed most of the buildings on this entire lot. Only the Shone House and the Martin Hotel were salvaged.
The ground that the Lafayette Hotel once stood on is now occupied by Mike's Mineshaft Bar. This bar was originally built by the Pedroli Family as a grocery store and was known as the Market Spot.Read More
