Schmidt/Litho Arts Building

52. Schmidt/Litho Arts Building

329 S. Bridge Street

The Schmidt Building was erected after the 1891 Fire that swept downtown Winnemucca by John Schmidt, a shoemaker and rooming house keeper. It originally was a two-story brick structure with what appears to have been a Mesker adornment crowning its top. This impressive brick structure helped to save the rest of the block from the flames of the four-story El Dorado Hotel fire in 1918. However, the Schmidt Building is no stranger to flames itself-- in September 1969, fire engulfed this building. At the time, a printing business call Litho Arts occupied the structure. Ultimately, the fire destroyed the second-story, while the first was able to be salvaged. If you look closely along the roof line of the sides of this building, you can see brick work that now fills the bottom of what were the second-story windows.
